Abstract

This study aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of how green artificial intelligence (AI) literacy can be cultivated through sustainable pedagogical approaches in schools. Green AI literacy is defined as the ability to understand, utilize, and critically evaluate AI technologies while considering environmental sustainability, digital ethics, and social responsibility. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, this research involved 15 participants from three senior high schools in Bengkulu Province, comprising teachers, students, and principals. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using thematic analysis methods. The findings reveal four central themes: (1) eco-technological awareness, (2) integration of green pedagogy in AI-based learning, (3) digital ethics and responsibility, and (4) transformation of environmental values and awareness. The study extends Transformative Learning Theory by introducing the Pedagogical Green AI Literacy Framework, which integrates technological literacy, ecological consciousness, and ethical reflection. Practically, this framework provides guidance for curriculum development and educational policies that promote responsible, ethical, and ecologically just AI practices within schools.
