Implementing International Curriculum in Local Schools: Opportunities and Challenges
Keywords:

The globalization of education has encouraged many local schools to adopt international curricula as a strategy to improve educational quality and develop students’ global competencies. This study aims to examine the implementation of international curricula in local schools by exploring the opportunities and challenges experienced by educators and school leaders. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis involving principals, curriculum coordinators, and teachers. The data were analyzed thematically to identify key patterns related to curriculum implementation processes.
The findings reveal that the implementation of international curricula provides significant opportunities, including the enhancement of students’ critical thinking skills, English language proficiency, and global awareness, as well as the promotion of student-centered and inquiry-based pedagogical practices. Additionally, international curricula contribute to improved school reputation and parental trust. However, the study also identifies several challenges, particularly related to teacher readiness, curriculum alignment with national standards, language demands, and limited instructional resources. Tensions between global curriculum frameworks and local cultural values further complicate the implementation process.
The study highlights the importance of institutional leadership, continuous professional development, and adaptive curriculum strategies in ensuring sustainable implementation. Developing hybrid curriculum models that integrate international standards with local contexts emerges as a key approach to balancing global aspirations and local educational needs. This study contributes to the literature on curriculum internationalization by providing empirical insights into how international curricula are implemented in local school settings and offers practical implications for policymakers, school leaders, and educators.
