Religious education plays a strategic role in Indonesia’s national education system as it contributes to the development of students’ moral, spiritual, and character formation. In this context, Islamic Religious Education (IRE) constitutes an essential component of the national curriculum and supports the achievement of national educational goals. This study aims to analyze the position of the Islamic Religious Education curriculum within Indonesia’s national education system based on Law Number 20 of 2003 on the National Education System. The research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected from legal documents and relevant academic literature and analyzed through content analysis focusing on the provisions of Law Number 20 of 2003 related to religious education and curriculum policy. The findings reveal that religious education holds a strong normative position within the national education framework. This is reflected in the national education objectives emphasizing faith, piety, and noble character; the legal guarantee of students’ rights to receive religious education according to their beliefs; and the designation of religious education as a compulsory subject within the national curriculum structure. These findings indicate that the Islamic Religious Education curriculum possesses a clear legal and institutional foundation within Indonesia’s national education system. The study implies the importance of developing an adaptive and contextual IRE curriculum capable of strengthening character education within the national education framework.
